On Sunday 7th November the Birmingham Exiles under 15’s youth team played a cracking game against Old Yardleians. In the first ten minutes Exiles took a big blow with Old Yards running in two tries for Exiles to go 12-0 down, but the team kept their heads up and made a great come back with two tries from scrum-half Alex Gibson both converted by Fly-half George Carlton. The game coming to life with some super attacking rugby by Exiles with a fantastic try by centre Michael Rowe. Later in the game centre Michael Rowe scored another try also converted with new player Delano scoring another two tries. Big thanks to Old Yards for a great game.

Sunday 3rd October

On Sunday the Exiles Junior Section kicked off their season with two home matches, a feat which has never been done before in the history of the Junior Section. Exiles under 15's played Edwardians in a very tough and physical encounter which saw Edwardians take an early lead. It didnt end there as the opposition continued to pile on the pressure and the points. E's did see a glimmer of hope with a try response just before half time but the score line was looking gloomy with Exiles 5 tries down.

The second half saw a rerun of the Great Escape with a rejuvinated Exiles hitting the opposition for 6, with an incredible comeback led by skipper Michael Rowe and George Carlton. The supporters were certainly being entertained despite heavy rainfall throughout the game. As Exiles came back to level the scores Edwardians didnt give in and scored again to keep their noses in front. In the end the desire from Exiles especially key players including Dean Lindsay, Reece Williams and Tom Gilfoyle put Exiles back in front. Final result Exiles 46 Edwardians 39. A tremendous match and support from both teams in this local derby!!

Exiles under 17s kicked off their season with a match against close friends Wednesbury. Despite the opposition being unable to field a full side, the sides were juggled about to create a 13 aside match which was a pleasure to watch. Both teams played in the true spirit of rugby, giving effort and sportsmanship throughout. Exiles were far superior which was credit to the hard work from both coaches and players during the summer. All players deserve a mention for their efforts especially for their commitment over the last 3 months to create a welcoming environment and a desire for hardwork.

It will be interesting to see how Exiles under 17s get on against future opposition as there is bags of talent waiting to be unleashed. The under 15s are showing great character and are on the verge of representing Greater Birmingham with 2-3 players on the verge of being selected to represent the county!

The development of Exiles Junior Section has been helped by their continued partnership with James Richardson and the School Sports Partnership in Sheldon & Yardley and also with the success of funding and awards that have been won over the summer. Club Development Officer Andy Root is pleased with the progress and looks forward to the transition period over the next 18 months when the under 17s start feeding through to adult rugby.

Birmingham Exiles U14’s 47 - 46 Spartans U14’s

Team Photo March 2010

Yet another fine performance from the Exiles under 14’s side saw them run out eventual winners by one point in a super game of flowing intense rugby. The Spartans team should hold their heads up after giving a great performance with the Exiles scoring in the final minute of play to take the spoils. Some fine running from Michael Rowe and George Carlton scoring tries with Michael converting all but one, some super cover tackling by the Exiles in particular Alex Gibson and Thomas Gilfoyle showing great carrying of the ball. All round a great team performance with Spartans providing some excellent play to make this one of the games of the season to watch with both teams showing great attacking flair and open rugby. Well done to both teams on a great game.

Sunday 24th January 2010: Exiles U14 67 - 36 Aston Old Ed’s U14

A very enjoyable game to watch. Great rugby end to end stuff, with both sides competing to the very end. The first half was hard fought, the Exiles playing uphill with the sun in their eyes saw Aston Old Ed’s outscoring Exiles to take the lead 25-14 at half time with their number 10 running the show, both teams being fairly evenly matched but some fantastic teamwork, hard tackling from all of the Exiles in the second half saw Exiles fight back to win, the pack turning the power play on to provide good ball with the nine, ten, twelve axis really firing to score some great tries and provide quick ball to enable the winger to score along with some hard work in defence from all of the Exiles preventing Aston from scoring more. The whole team deserve a huge well done for playing a great game and a big thanks to Aston Old Ed’s for the game.

Sunday 5th April: Exiles 36 - 14 Birmingham and Solihull

Sunday 8th March: Handsworth 17 - 15 Exiles

Although Handsworth had one player more than Exiles, that did not dampen the spirits of the team. Within 70 seconds of the first half, Exiles were leading by 5 points thanks to an amazing run from Leon Williams during the first play. Jordan Pecheur, although missing the conversions, made up for it with a try of his own. Even with a few high-tackles being thrown at him he still managed to pull through and score. After Handsworth had scored two tries one after another, a last desperate attempt from both Dylan Baker and Brandon Patterson got the team the last try of the match. It was Dylans chance to take the conversion but it was at an extremely awkward angle and was missed. Both teams gave it their all and look forward to a return match at the Exiles ground. Sunday 13th April: Exiles 19 - 24 Handsworth

An excellent team performance showed progression against a more experienced side. Captain Jack led the side in absence of Peter and showed good leadership in ordering his team to provide effort and commitment. The boys did not let him down and stuck at to the very end, where Handsworth scored in the last second to go into the lead. An excellent performance by Kieran and tries scored by Dante and Gavin. Credit to all the team who will look forward to the return match on Presidents Day!
